Happy Hanukkah good evening it's now the third night of Hanukkah we lit the third candle of Chanukah tonight her neighbors hallelujah sham these candles they are holy every night of Hanukkah we were here at the hit of virtue for a special program with guests rabbis songs and good music our sages established the eight nights of Hanukkah as days of song and praise so here we are to celebrate together so we got a special welcome together with me in our studio tonight is Rabbi Yaakov asher Sinclar rabbi yaakov asha Sinclar has been part of the or somatic staff since 1987 whoa it's like 30 years
almost it's exactly 30 years a long time he is a senior staff writer of the Torah internet publications or net he's also the tour weekly which I've been reading for years and seasons of the Moon which I'd love to hear about it he is also a popular public speaker both in Israel in the United States now before we start our interview we always start with a song okay here's my trusty guitar I think you know what I'll do go you know an amazing experience we have in Psalms that we say during Konica every day we say Olive Halliwell is you know and and there's these words on a sham kyani Abdi ha
Annie of the hub in a messiah that please God you know answer my prayers be tough Lilly say hi or take away my bonds because I'm your servant and the son of your your maidservant so I remember the year I came to Asia tour in Jerusalem I was praying with a group of calcium on hoshanah Rabbah morning it at sunrise at the cousin yeah and Here I am I'm at the Western Wall and there's thousands of people because it's you know that's a big big prayer hoshanah Rabbah morning and with all these custom and we're and my parents happen to be renting happening he came actually to get me out of your shoes
but they stayed themselves so they were renting overlooking the Western Wall way up high on the Jewish quarter so it's it's sunrise and I'm praying and when we got to the words because I'm your servant the son of your maidservant so I actually started crying because here were all these holy Hasidic men it was like Belzer I don't know what they were but they were they all are this they're all the son of gods maidservant except for me the son of you know miss Los Angeles you know and I look back just kind of tears in my eyes I look back up to I don't know looking at their apartment you could
see it from the Kotel and there at sunrise is a silhouette of my mother holding an art scroll sitter and going like this and then I really cried and I never she never put it down she never put that sit her down well let's do it again yaaaaa then can we go on that was good I have no idea I was gonna come sing this one the guitar you play awesome no I mean I I play exactly you're very humble everything I asked you you do your first leg saying no and then you know well yeah well you know when you see people do something good okay yeah you know where you fit in mm-hmm Wow so let's be gettin uh I
have some questions for you today and let's start with Hanukkah which happened over 2000 years ago and I'm asking you like with a celebration of something that's from 2000 years ago it tends towards commemoration and we all know like I imagine a lot of people are watching this in countries where they do commemorate things there's usually more alcohol at the commemoration then there's the commemoration because it's dead it happened history you know history so so what about this holiday is like not at all just history but it's like total relevance for us today you know you don't have you
brought up a very good point because as he say in other cultures people have their days of commemoration they remember things that happened our sages teaches the Jewish time is not linear it's cyclically mmm that every single Hanukkah we return to a certain space spiritual landscape if you like a window in time absolutely and we revisit that same things the same thing with Shabbat every seven days we we go back we revisit that same first Shabbat the same power the same spiritual influence is flowing down from upstairs amazing I try to trick my kids sometimes on Shabbat I say what was
yesterday and there's a Friday or they'll say Thursday you know sure bunting right I didn't know yesterday was last Shabbat because compared to the weekdays right he couldn't call today and yesterday Thursday yes it was last Shabbat it's a patty like you're saying it like total window so go on yeah no so there's this this influence that takes place over every every read Hanukkah where we receive the same a same power that was given that same battle that was fought now you asked me what's that got the relevance has it got to do with today I can answer in one word Hollywood yeah Hollywood is no
more than a 21st century representation between the same battle that took place 2,000 years ago Wow not professional sports well those are mostly on TV these that's also there's millions of viewers sure I mean that you're right because the Greeks do have this two-pronged thing one is the art which i want to talk about and the other is sports no I'm not so much into sports so you have to get somebody else to talk about the Hollywood I was born in Hollywood by the way literally was born in Hollywood Cedar sinai of Lebanon so to understand where this all fits in we really have to go back to the
history of Greece where does Greece come from the word for Greece in Hebrew is Yvonne and Yvonne was the children it was one of the children of EFS japhet who was in turn one of the children of Noah Noah had three children shame come the effort and they really represent three perceptions of the world the lowest if you like of those three perceptions is come come in Hebrew means hot come perceives the world is what I can feel if I can feel it it's there sensual its indistinct essential instinctual mmm maybe music is that power we talk about music being hot so if I can feel it with my feelings
it's there the world is defined this in the way limited but why what I can feel that's the lowest level the next level above that is the level of the Greeks which is the level of your fence japhet is the level of the world of beauty with aesthetics meaning whatever the mind can content contain and perceive that exists more than that I'm not sure and that's what led the Greek so to speak because itself definitionally the world exists of one I can perceive more than that I don't know if you can show it to me under the microscope it exists if it doesn't if you can't show it to me show me that
Shabbos does something to a person mm-hmm you can't show it to a person so by definition their world was was limited to what you can see what you can see like there was a famous Russian joke when they discovered how do you say bring in x-ray they say we've x-rayed the whole body we did not find the soul during the that's exactly theistic precisely and not what's why the Greeks and everything they did was built and they did it fantastically on what you can see the world is what I can see hmm no we know a lot more today with quantum physics right so you can't see anything so this is it's
interesting our physicists are converging basically with what the Torah says it's not our subject for today right but this is this is something which is fascinating that physicists are coming to see that there is a grand unifying principle which we would call at the end of days Hashem Hashem is their house that's what they're basically cute they call it the god particle they're looking for the fundamental unit of matter the thumb and they call it net which they're looking for the god particle right which is very cute right from aesthetics to physics get back to aesthetics so the aesthetics
was was the Greek view of the world Beauty the world is what I can see and the Jewish people with and that's yeah fed which is beauty the third son of Noah was called Shem Shem what is shénme Shem means name name is the essence when we talk about names in English names are something conventional you know if I go into a restaurant and I would or a steak and they bring me a hammer it's not gonna stay in business too long but there's nothing really but EDM essentially about the name steak or hammer right it's conventional symbolic it symbolizes that piece of meat you're asking for in lhasa
hakodesh in the holy tongue why is it a holy language or the many reasons given is because the holy language into its essence mmm the words themselves the name are the essence are the essence and that's why you should know of it Ronna listen if somebody has a family member who's very ill but sometimes they will add another name to that person mm-hmm and what that does is ways we can't really understand is to bring another pipe down from upstairs to plug into that measurement by adding that name Wow so names are of the essence is a beautiful med rush actually that says that the cottage borough
hood that God when he finished the creation brought to Adam arashan the first man all of the animals and Adam gave him gave them names the names intuited their essence and at the end of this major says that a college boy who Shem turned to other Mauritian and he said what is my name really and other missions said your name is the ineffable name that we don't pronounce the tetragrammaton you'd cave of K so the name of something and of course that is the essential name of God the name of something represents the essence this was something that the Greeks didn't understand they could see the
world through Yaffe through beauty but to penetrate to the essence to Shem the the name itself the thing itself they couldn't do so what's this got to do with Hollywood we live in the society where movies I once remember driving many years ago I was in Los Angeles I was driving to davon summer I think was a Century City Century City karma exactly and I was driving past these about six ten in the morning these huge concrete monoliths soundstages and I thought to myself this is the Dream Factory this is where the dreams are made hollywood produces dreams and these dreams are dreamt by the
entire world we think their thoughts we and really it's it's it's not a big v8 where everyone's dreaming of that no they create a dream that we live out Holly winters it's interesting because I you know how the the parable the moral and the parable have been reversed in our generation what we would call in Hebrew the nihms shell and the Marshall have become reversed this is really what Hollywood is done for example a very interesting example when they the NASA wanted to Commission the spaceship enterprise why do they call it enterprise because of Star Trek in otherwise the illusion really
became the reality yeah you see it yes we see this all this is this is this is what's happening in society we live in and really it goes back to something from the idea of the Greeks as we're speaking about before there are two ways to get to the truth the Greek believed that through the celebration of beauty and I think it was John Keats in the 19th century if the period of English history of English literature with a period of the Romantic poets the Romantic poets like Shelley and Wordsworth and they really took on the same ideas of the Greeks and he wrote I think it was Shelley wrote a an
ode on a Grecian urn famous poem at the end of this poem he says beauty is truth and truth is beauty that is paraphrasing now all ye know on earth and all you need to know now that's a very interesting parallel truth is beauty and beauty is truth now the Jew says what is true is beautiful by definition in the Hebrew language the word m.ed truth contains the first the last I love tough and the middle letter men true truth to the Jew is something that is consistent in ever but wavers he goes from the bidding beginning to the end we would argue with the prep the idea that what is beautiful is
not necessarily true beaut something can be beautiful without necessarily be true the surface of something and the both like the facade of a room a building of well you're from Hollywood you've ever driven down the soundstage here yeah these amazing facades and behind them is nothing nothing all right so the whole idea of artifice the word art comes is connected with the word artifice is very much part of the Greek idea of how you get to the truth as I think it was Coleridge said he said that there's a thing called the willing suspension of disbelief what happens when you go into a theater
what happens we going to a cinema you know that what's it like you're sitting in a three o'clock matinee on Broadway somewhere and you're watching the the hill and hero killing and killing the villain you know this guy's gonna get up walk out have a nice cup of tea and come back tomorrow afternoon do exactly the same thing all over again you said in the film where they spent you know vast amounts of money on the special effects probably the special effects of this film was larger than the gross national product of Peru last year billions to make these illusions now we know they're illusions
but we suspend our disbelief why says the Greek because through these illusions you can get to the truth by the willing suspension of disbelief which they called poetic truth there's something which through this illusion through this artifice through art we can get to something which is beyond that which is true this to me as I understand it is the essential argument the argument throughout 2,000 years between Athens and Jerusalem the Jews says no truth has to be true in the beginning you can't get to truth through artifice now it's interesting parenthetically that those people who are
involved in this world of artifice very high casualty rates why is it that you see in people are involved in films and entertainment and the the the the level of suicides drug addiction alcoholism these are the people who are dreaming the dreams for us and what a terrible price they have to pay for it hmm as a complex subject I don't want to over 700 K so but let's but that's just like to bring it bring it down into like the pure message for the for the viewer right who's watching tonight like really to hone it in on this question is that when you're when you're sharing about about Hollywood
creating these dreams that now the people are living out and as if that somehow getting you to the truth and what you're saying is ultimately that you got to start with truth right you start with truth start with truth and we believe the Torah is truth and when the person immerses himself in in Torah he gets to the truth mm-hmm he becomes part of the truth very nice okay so now we know the Greeks were against specific things okay and I'd like you to please share with us why these specific things which were circumcision Shabbat and the sanctification sanctification of the Moon I mean that's
obscure right that's obscure writ me law okay they love the body maybe that's an issue that's really well maybe they think we're not working hard enough on Shabbat but what's their deal with the sanctification of the moon-like yeah so please share with us elusive so Yom Tov is II said the the the idea of Brit Milah is is the idea of the human body is perfect hmm and that's the worship is we will be speaking about before of art and aesthetics how can you take the human body which is perfect and and and and play with it right the Jew says no the human body is perfectible the human body is not
perfect when it in its it's trapped in the physical you have to take that body and you have to bring it to perfection through your actions by spiritualizing it that's the idea of Rhys Millen is to symbolize the so to speak the removal of the of the of the trappings of the physical world to free the physical to be able to applicant it can soar upwards it's really parallel to what we were talking about before to get to the truth don't stay with inside your body your body is a resource your body is a beautiful thing but it's not here to be true this beauty is truth it's not that's not the case
the case is you have to take it you have to elevate it you have to make it holy mmm so wouldn't Gentiles circumcise themselves why just the juice well that's part of the Brit the word the Brit is is the word called the Covenant now the coven this is something which is specifically between two people a covenant basically means you and me we're going to go into something together and now of course anybody in the world can become Jewish the price of entry is the same as it was 3000 years ago I think it's probably the only thing that sudden never suffered for an inflation you want to become a Jew
the Vikash are you welcome we're waiting for you but there is a specific covenant between the God and the Jewish people and that is a case for sign that's the sign that we dedicate our bodies now it's interesting that the place where we make that sign is the place of the future that is the part of the body from where the future of a person comes out and Wow and we say to God we say a Shem you have made a covenant with us you have made your covenant that everything you will be in this world we'll be done throughout through the Jewish people you've dedicated your future to us we dedicate our
future to you mmm that's the idea the reciprocity of them never heard that one that's awesome and then and so then we got Shabbat so just let me finish on bris meter so bris well it's interesting because you know they said about Michelangelo Michelangelo who was carved that beautiful Statue of David sure they said - Michelangelo Michael how are you able to do this he said it's very simple I just take a hammer and a chisel and everything that's not David and I just take away which is interesting as you think about it that he understood there was he had to perfect that block of stone intim -
David and the Jew understands we have to take our David and to perfect that into something which is reaching up with which is where and of course that's why Chanukah is on the eighth day that's the whole idea of kind of garden if you spoke about this but eight and Jewish thought is always that which is transcendent which is beyond right seven days of the week the seven days of the week seven colors in the rainbow seven notes on the diatonic scale which I attempted to join you with before and there were eight always signifies one step beyond that's Chanukah that's bris Neelam Wow Robert
Sinclair guess what what we're gonna have to leave Shabbat okay and in the new moon the sanctification of the new moon as a mystery at this point okay now we have a special message from our guest charlie Harare in New York Charlie Rory's a dear friend of mine and we want to hear what he has to say what's his main message tell us Charlie about Hanukkah thank her my glaze I really appreciate it happy Chanukah to everybody I want to share with you an idea that I just recently heard and thought about so a couple of weeks ago I got an email from somebody and the typique of the EEMA was where does
greatness come from and this person wrote me this a whole email how they're going through challenges and they wanted to understand how come some people seem to be great some people seem to rise above their challenges some people seem to be able to be amongst their peers and step up and take on responsibilities and become leaders have become great people that everybody knows and this person where does it come from is it inside them is there something around them do they Dobbin for it is there some kind of special brother that they get are they born with it where does greatness come from and I
believe the answer is found in Conoco Hanukkah is an incredible unit of and what makes it so interesting is that there's so little going on and all of our young tips we've got so much to do we've got long meals we're sitting in shul we get extra mitzvahs there's so many things that we're doing but Hanukkah it's very simple you come home and you light a candle and that's it basically the whole Yellin t'v isn't just the candle and we like candles because we had this miracle that happened a long time ago after the Cushman I am beat the venom they came back to the base I make their stay looked
for the oil they couldn't find it and they found one jug of oil and everybody knows the story they've lit it and it lasted for eight days and because of the eight days of miracles we have eight nights of Hanukkah now the base how lady asks a great question he says wait a second if we're celebrating eight days of miracles which is why we have eight nights of Hanukkah how many days were actually miracles they found the jug of oil that means day one was totally natural the regular jug burned okay they too began the miracles so seven days would made sense but why do we have eight days of Hanukkah
of there's only seven days of miracles what was the miracle the first day and he gives and everybody gives tons of answers but there was one answer that really blew me and I think that was the answer that had within it the secret to where greatness comes from so I'll tell you story so a couple of months a couple of weeks ago I ran in the New York City Marathon I ran for a friend of mine his daughter she was going through some sickness and I ran and I raised money for her and part of the raising money you run a marathon and I ran this marathon and it was very very very challenging because you
have to run 26 miles and usually you don't run 26 miles you drive 26 miles and I remember sitting down when I trained I trained and I trained and I ate well and as I got to write for the race I asked a friend of mine who had ran marathons I need some advice what do I got to do so he says to me listen here's how it works when you first start running you're gonna feel great the endorphins are gonna go up in your brain you're gonna feel wonderful you train you feel great and then after a while it's gonna get a little hard and you're gonna feel tired but a be okay in your head you'll be fine and
then you're gonna hit what's called a wall for all the runners out there you know what I'm talking about it's called a wall and when you hit that wall you have nothing left but just doesn't have miles to run and remember nothing you're gonna say to yourself was and get you through the wall you're every part of you is gonna shut down everything in your brain isn't tell you to stop and I turned to my said well how do you through the wall there's only one way through the wall I said goes through it said what said through it you never get around the wall you never get above the wall when you hit
the wall it's you and yourself all you have is the deepest part of who you are you if they dig to a place that you didn't even know was there and battle it might now be fine and I get there and the race starts and he like he said the beginning I'm a little nervous and all of a sudden did the endorphins kick in I'm doing fine and it's five miles and ten miles and I'm okay and then all of a sudden 13 miles in I'm getting tired 15 miles in now I'm getting really tired 20 miles in I'm getting exhausted and once I hit my 21st mile I hit the wall and my brain is coming up with everything what are
you crazy what are you running for you're joking me you're ready an old man you've got kids you know I'm an athlete you're not young stop right now take a cab don't worry about no know the difference just stop you you're gonna hurt yourself and every excuse in the world and I had nothing left I was exhausted my body couldn't move my feet were killing me my brain was going off and I had being left inside me I had five more miles and I remember what he said though there's no up there's no down you get a dig into a place that you didn't know where that was there and you got to pull something out
and I remember running and telling myself listen brain I'm finishing this you can come with me or not and I had no choice but to dig into something then I didn't even know was there you see what happens in life sometimes is that life is going along and things are fine and sometimes Hashem throws us a curveball a challenge sometimes we're okay and we see something that has to happen and we know that if I engage in that if I take on that leadership if I take responsibility if I take on new things to do if I believe something is right but I actually do it the people around me my life I'm gonna
bring challenge upon myself and we get scared but we do it anyways and we volunteer we take on new things to do we learn a little bit more we deal with the challenges that God gives us and it's going okay and we're a little tired but you know what we push forward and then something happens we hit a wall it's too hard I can't take on those many people I can't push forward for that everyone tells me it's never gonna happen every time I try to engage in this I try to learn this I try to get closer to I said everyone tells me I'm crazy the thing that God sent me the thing that God sent the family
was too hard for us that child was too hard to raise that the issue is too hard to overcome at some point all of us go through some wall and you can't go up and you can't go down and you can't get through it see this is where most people give up this is where most people turn around this is where most people say maybe I'm not good enough maybe I'm not great enough but a few people then when they're up against the wall there are a few people that when the challenge gets too hard there are a few people that when the responsibility for the community gets too great there are a few people that
when connecting to a sham or to their family or to their children gets to be too hard there are those few people that say I'm never ever giving up I'm never giving up I'm just gonna have to dig to a deeper place that I was never in I just hit a wall and I'm gonna have to find something that's inside me that I never had to go to before there are these leaders out there that find a place inside down that they've never gone to because the community needs them there are family members out there that find a place to go to when their family needs them that they never ever gone through there are
soldiers and rabbis and individuals and citizens there are people all over that when the going gets tough they don't quit they just dig deeper and when they dig deeper deeper and deeper and deeper they find something that is so big and so powerful that gives them the strength and the courage and the knowledge and the braja and the issue to overcome that challenge you see that's where greatness is greatness isn't there greatness is here you know what it means to be born did sell a mellow Kim you know what it means to be born with a nephesh you know what it means to be born with a piece of a
Kurdish borough inside us mamas it means that every one of us walk around with a piece of ash on every one of us walk around with a source that can never ever be limited by the physical world every one of us can tap into something that is completely ruining that it's completely spiritual which means nothing physical can ever overcome it it's deep within us and God isn't handing it to us God's not putting it on a table because then what would it be worth God buries it inside and requires us to find it and when he throws a challenge at us or if there was an opportunity at us what he is doing is
he's given us a chance to push our physical body our physical mind further and further until it touches a deeper place a deeper source of our soul because when you access that depth you reveal who you really are and then you find that the greatness is within that's what it means to be a Jew but you remember that your greatness comes within you never have to become great you have to reveal the greatness you know sometimes we forget that the people involved in the story of Hanukkah were actually people you know they just become just figures in our mind they're just conceptual picture for a
second what it must have been like to be part of the hutchman i''m they went up against the Greek army the Greek army was the greatest army in antiquity the Greeks had just taken over the whole world they were in a separate force this wasn't you commandos these were Kohanim that were living in caves that fought with total miracles and the Madryn tell us just how crazy how amazing these miracles were and they fought the eve on him for three years this isn't happenin it-- this didn't happen over the weekend three years of battling till they finally get to the base I made this in picture memory
there's a famous question too much of it Seaboard they didn't even have to find kosher oil they were going beyond themselves they came to the base of minish they could have taken a weekend off they came to the base I mean they could have taken a couple of days say listen let's get our heads together listen we're exhausted we got the base image it's okay well figure it out while we build them a know-it-all it all happened bananas they say no we want to go above friend chemin we're not gonna rely on the fact that everything is taught me so we can rely on Tom my oil we're gonna go further we're
gonna find the oil that's the best oil we're gonna find the oil that's power and then looking in what happens to the look they don't find it so they keep on looking they don't find it they keep on looking a little fun you know what a reasonable person will do they would say okay we tried we're trying for you hashem it's for you can you help me a little bit oh you're not helping me it must mean that you don't really care or it's okay and they keep on looking and they still can't find it and they hit a wall and that wall says give up you've done so much you cut you took back the base I'm a
douche there's some in a couple of days they'll get new oil you see but that mentality is that what it means to be a hush man ie when you scream Mika MOCA Billy my chef when you have the guts to take on the Greek army to never give in to never give up your your Yiddish guy that mentality they don't give up you know they do they keep on digging they keep on digging and they keep on digging in at some point the Kurdish borough who looks down and says you don't defer to nature you don't defer to the environment around you I don't defer to nature either then if you're gonna go past yourself I'll
go past myself the base lav says you know what the miracle the first night was we celebrate the first night the fact that Jews that these Jews never gave up and they brought the rest of the miracles the seven days of miracles came because a bunch of Jews would never give up and when you do not allow nature to get in your way neither does God and you think you have nothing left inside you and when you think this is as far as you can go and you say but I need to continue and give and go deeper and it could have broke down and goes finally there's someone that realizes that this whole thing is
just me there's no nature there's no what you can and can't do I built you how do you know what you can and can't do if I gave you a challenge that means you can do it even I don't know who you are I think I threw a challenge your way that you can't overcome oh you respect your nature okay fine let's play by Nature oh you don't respect your nature you break through the wall you keep on pushing well if you're gonna keep on pushing and be unnatural go to cirrhosis I can be unnatural too and that's the essence of greatness and that's the essence of miracles you know it's amazing be think about
it where does it will come from comes from olives olives are one of the few fruits that has the fruit when you crush them they become more valuable interesting that olives are bitter fruits and when you crush the bitter fruits when you get inside then what you have is maybe the most spiritual element on earth right because oil brings fire and there's nothing really more spiritual than fire right fires anti-gravity shabbos calluses fire when you have a yard site fire when Hashem reveals himself for the first time to moshe rabbeinu he does it in fire because fire is the representation of
ruthless it's amazing how through the bitterness through the bitterness by crushing the bitterness by getting within the bitterness do you have a substance that can bring Roth yes because that's who we are all of us have greatness within and when we are sitting in our own personal bass humming dishes and we want to find that little bit that little drop of tahor we want to go a little bit deeper and everything that's reasonable says stop it's in that moment where we say we'll never stop that we find the capacity to be great and we find the worthiness of being truly miraculous Happy Hanukkah
thank you Charlie or Ari you're amazing and rabbi Sinclair whoa I really appreciate your enlightening words to us on Hanukkah and this inspirational message or messages and I'm sure the two of us could just keep going really probably so thank you very very much and now we are gonna light up the night with some music from the amazing singer ami ROM de Vere in an exclusive concert that he's going to do for us for Hanukkah Happy Hanukkah everybody and don't forget we are going to be here on multi Shabbat we'll be doing our next amazing interviews happy Chanukah to everyone and we'll see him once
