Shavua Tov and Happy Hanukkah good evening it is now the fifth night of Hanukkah we lit the fifth candle of Chanukah tonight a neighbor's hot aloo koi - ham these candles they are holy and here we are in the heada Boop channel for a special program the first inaugural program of Chanukah for the english-speaking programming with guest rabbis songs and good music our sages established the eight days of Hanukkah as days of song and praise so here we are together to celebrate and we have a special guest tonight one of my friends for years and years although you and I are so busy we might get to
schmooze in an elevator which has happened before rabbi Dovid Orlovsky rabbi Arlovski is a former Regional Director for the NC sy and I imagine that was a blast for the students when you were the director there I was young you were young oh you weren't funny then it was a lot of fun your honor now I'm old rabbi Laska is an internationally acclaimed lecturer and educator he is one of the most dynamic and entertaining lecturers in the Jewish world today now rabbi Alaska even though I have some questions for you we're gonna start with a little song oh goody I think we're gonna go with we're
going with Hallel because we say hallo during Hanukkah every day eight days crazy nights and the so in Halle one of the great lines as Mena mate Socorro secon Nativa miracle car which means that that from the from the narrow straits meaning from difficulty meaning struggle I call out to God and he answers me with breath with space with abundance with with expansion and so let's let's do it here we go uncle Amy in a pizza Corsica the innovator Cora Zika hah hah hah hah hah hah Soph I'm trying to channel my inner Carlebach so that was actually a car they bought me an amazing indeed so rabbi I
have a few questions for you and okay why did the miracle of Hanukkah last eight days I mean it's easier look look at the menorah it's got eight candles gosh otherwise you'd have an extra one I think we also have eights of gunny oh here I'm just checking no we have nine against ones for the showers yeah that's because you see people make the mistake so Kenyatta and not the same thing as as jelly doughnuts in America they have jelly doughnuts here what they do is they take like old collar rolls and they soak them in oil so that if you put in a wick it would actually recreate the kind of
chimerical and burn for eight days and so the real reason we eat these is because you know the Greeks worshiped the body we're gonna show we're not gonna be like that it's a the interesting thing about about eight and it does tie it with myself kind of Yoda I don't you think it was there was no segue here yeah this world basically the number that captures this world is seven the morale 101 right if you think of this world as four directions up and down six right this world is six hush I'm is he hammers - AM is truly everywhere up up down down right left and all around that's front back in so
it's six sides the point in the middle that gives it all meaning if you will the little ball in the middle of the Rubik's Cube that allows the whole thing to turn around that seven seven is what brings all the six together six days you will work and on the seventh day you'll enjoy what you worked during those six days six years you will plant and in the Smith of the seventh year in a sabbatical year then you will enjoy what you worked for for six years seven is always that number that brings those six together so that's six and seven what eight eight is outside eight is beyond interesting
that Hanukkah is the only holiday that doesn't even stay in one month it moves from one month to the next month it's outside of time and interestingly enough if you want to talk about the words a little bit Sheva is related to the word so via your full shamone is from the words may not then more mean I mean in fact meaning fat right moving beyond your limits right between your clothing fit you in your Sava it doesn't that fit you when you Schmidt nah yeah it moves beyond so Hanukkah is something that's completely out of the normal functioning of the world whatever you find 8:8 is outside
right that's why you have seven days of sokka's right seven days of silk is we say in a souca surrounded on six sides and us in the middle we're the seventh we take the $7 denim the seven four species that's a little bit of a of a non sequitur right but what do I mean by seven you have one lulav one S word three had a sim three myrtles yeah and two a rubber is two willows you take those seven things and you bundle them together and you wave them in the six directions with you in the middle and every day you march around and on the seventh day of circus ocean around but you march around seven
times and then you get rid of the lulav and estrogen and you get rid of the soaker and you get rid of everything and you come to meanie at Sarah's the eighth day and which there is nothing well nothing and so whenever you find eight you're moving outside of the confines of this world and that's that's why you'll find that that word ties in a lot to Kanaka Shemin is oil right shamone the hashman oi'm there was a great nation there so there were dates all over the temple aid all over the place interesting enough is shamayim and we talk about heaven right when you a day you'd ma'am at the end
that makes a plural Chum i am all of the Shung are over there all of the eight which mona and chemin they related to the shum it's over there right that's what we say that the letters on the dreidel the sieve Yvonne represents Nazca Dahlia Shum there yeah it's someplace else Shum I am neshama right your neshama is that in your body it's outside of you it's something beyond you yeah so when you come to conical all these aids is because Konica is something that's out you you see the beautiful conocchia that you have over here is beautiful menorah so you see how you have oil some people don't
just put the oil they put some water and then they put the oil this way it doesn't burn the glass when it gets all the way down yeah because oil floats above the water you have water and then you have the chemin which is Shum the oil is up there it's beyond aid is always beyond that's why this is a this is a holiday that's just filled with spirituality it's the holiday of light all right light is beyond light doesn't have substance in the photon energy yeah but then they have then they have substance in the sense that most things have substance I once heard there robbery dr. Joe Schroder he's
not dr. rabbi dr. Gerald Schroder he's two times doctor he's got to a PhD but he said that that the closest thing you have the summer that's not physical in this world is light that that energy that photon energy something is beyond it this is the holiday of light we've reached this interesting that I you know many people put the water and the oil on top of it circus which is seven days and then you move to the eighth day tree near Terrace it's all about water we say the prayer for rain we pour water on the altar on circus and then you count interesting from circus to Hanukkah 70 days and
then you come to Hanukkah and you have these eight days which is light you go from the water to the light water which is probably the most physical thing you can imagine what it takes the shape of whatever you put it in it's totally physical it doesn't have any real substance it doesn't have any real form towards some and it moves all the way to light which only has surah which only has form it's something that's beyond the confines of the physical well conic is this is this is 8 days that are fraught with holiness and spirituality amazing and it's interesting we do it on the winter solstice
when it's like as dark as it can get and that's where Duncan light and like whatever you thought was dark interesting we started with a song from deed from the struggle from the constricted conscious nice right I call out yeah amazing and what about ribbon in Bahia who talks about like these eight hints of the oil of mushiya Shia is exactly that this world is the seventh and Michelle is the eighth you find this by the way this reference um the Gemara says that King David played on a hardwood seven strings and Michelle playing a harp with eight strings it means it's a type of music that's
beyond the confines of this world it's it's a different world the musical scale actually exists seven eight one two three one go but then that dough brings you back to the beginning only on a higher level and at that spiral so that the eight is something that is greater than the sum of the parts it's outside of the regular limitations and what could can I just ask so nice to see you how do we how do we take every time I come to you I feel like it's a holiday yeah my wife actually just wrote a book on the all the holidays of the year for women reason that the love them and not dread what's
involved right and so to she just literally published the first one it's on Konica yeah yeah called it's called good young to buy okay I I happen to think that Hanukkah is really more younger than anything else because the donuts are glazed so yeah how can we you know people are watching this and they may be feeling like they're like mister material or mr. finite and you're talking about all this like beyond video beyond mister infinite so how do we take mr. finite how can we use Hanukkah and then this is like you know pretty off-the-cuff but what can you say about all everything you just
shared what would be a practical advice to someone watching this who wants to get into a synonyms wit I could have read the example with music alright we had a little musical moment at the beginning and you mentioned the musical scale there are certain things in this world that we call transcendental music is that define the experience of music it's not just that you heard something you know I when I ran and csy they had a program called our way for the Jewish deaf and the Eastern Band and I said why would you have a band that the kids are deaf you know hearing impaired to be more correct so
they said they like the rhythm they can feel the vibrations but that's what that's what music is yeah but you see but when a person listens to music it's not the vibrations they're hearing something that is reaching them on an internal level that they can't really describe it's something beyond yourself that's transcendental something that moves beyond yourself yeah the I have to say I've been living in Israel now for close to 30 years one of the hardest things I had to give up with autumn now you're from LA on a meaningful autumn yeah no we didn't have out of boredom in LA but I came from
Long Island and when the trees would turn color red and orange and scarlet and gold and it was just you would look at the trees and there was something about it that just lifted you out or that first snow when the whole world is white and you've sense something beyond yourself that's transcendental we we talk about spiritual experiences and it's so hard because we always get ourselves caught up in the moment and we miss the greater thing today in psychology they have a term for what we're trying to achieve it's called mindfulness the idea of mindfulness is focus on the here and focus you know
don't let things slip away you missed the details you have a terrible story here a terrible story to show you don't Villas terrestres yeah the gore says that the Kohanim they used to have a lottery how to give all the different services they'd make a circle and they'd pick a number they go around make a lottery but the true Merced Esha which was the first thing they did they would go up to the altar take away some of the ashes from yesterday put it on the side they weren't already Kohanim who got there that early in the morning so they had a race up the ramp whoever got there beat out the
other guy by for almost yeah four to six feet depending who you talk to he got to do it if they were within that you know boundary of for a'most then they came back down they had a lottery so one time these two come on in my neck and neck one guy can't take it he's so excited about the being able to do the Mitzvah he pushes the other guy off guy falls it breaks his leg so they did away with the race that's the good version the brace that brings the bad version bad version is he didn't push him off he pulled out a knife and stabbed him no yeah and it's the guys falling and lying there in his
death throes his father runs over sees his son dying and pulls out the knife and says don't worry I took it out before he died it's not impure the knife right there nice his son is lying there dying but you're more concerned about the status of the knife that's what happens people get caught up on the under how we do things that we forget why we're doing it did you ever do one of those childbirth preparation courses did you get one of those yeah you're my generation I am to say there was something with my first child but but it my wife was doing all the breathing exercises to this day I could
do the breathing better than she does people come every anyway but you know they sent an amazing thing they said husbands are coming in to try to support their wife let's face it we're totally unprepared for this it's not all men are genetically prepared to do is paste outside and say any news any news they should not be in there after they introduced the husband coming into childbirth divorce rates run up over 50% I don't know this is a relationship well we're just not meant to do this but anyway they said an amazing thing a woman who's giving birth is in tremendous pain so the medical
system would like to make it worse so they put these belts on her to Matt to monitor the contractions as if the screaming is not enough you know they want to monitor the contractions so the husband instead of being their supporters life watches the screen and he says oh look it's a contraction goes I know well it's a big one because I know look it's peaking I know but we get caught up and watching the screen is that of the person who's actually there so weeps your advice is reality so the point is that we have to focus on the purpose of what we're doing so much of what we do people don't know
why we're doing it take our beautiful canoe Kia take our beautiful Manila right if you look at it and I'm talking about you look at it so you'll see the water and the oils floating above that and the flame is flickering above that just above the oil you can see it it's there and not quite there it's above and the the the flame represents in the shaman Nana Shama that's your sole shum and you see it pointing up it's here and not quite there nice good all your Shum which is what the dragon will always said they came out with these new is really dreidels nice good Oh yup oh yeah but but it
always said nice kadoya shop even though the first Hanukah was in Israel those days gosh um because if you're Shum and means you're not PO Shum means they're I'm going someplace else I'm not living life for here I'm living life Shum Shmona neshama Cushman ilium Shemin I'm going someplace else I'm going Shum Shum I am don't live here live there you know and that's the problem people they don't see this world is a corridor well we're young we have dreams you remember Cat Stevens of course remember father and son yeah of course the father thanks to his son it's not time to make a change settle
down take it easy you're still young that's your fault there's so much you have to learn if you like you find a girl it find a girl if you like you may marry you will still be here tomorrow but your dreams my not that got us so upset haha cannot try to explain that part is not important I just wanna do my catch Davis but you know it was you know dreams dream dreams we were young we had dreams who were gonna do something in this world we believed in something and then we became practical I worry whether about the knife is gonna become impure and I miss I miss the leaves changing color I miss
the snow Foy missed the music in my life I miss the beauty and the opportunity to move beyond this world and I'm locked I'm locked in the in the worrying about the status of the knife as opposed to my own son dying in front of me so comes Konica that's what we focus on we focus on that flame above the oil we focus on that moving beyond it's more than the experience on Purim holiday for them ISM it's what they eat that's the main thing in Perm sudha eat drink write super kind of yells right we eat and drink by the way you know I eat have got a yolk you have you have doughnuts or you have
latkes because they're cooked with oil to remind us of the oil the oil that floats above that's chemin that Chum that's over there yeah but but it says we have you can have a festive meal on Hanukkah if you're using it as a reason to sing and praise God oh it's by all means have the party uh-huh you know but but what happens people have a beautiful Shabbos sudha they have a beautiful Shabbos meal you bring the family together why so that we can connect and have meaning and instead we put the focus on the food we eat and we get out of here right you know and instead of using as an opportunity
to say while we get together mule here's the good friends the start of something special all right get together have a good time and and and move beyond give Hanukkah it's got to be a time for you to renew that that experience of dreams of believing that there's something more to your life and just you know get up on the moor get out of bed and go to the kitchen for yourself a cup of ambition and yarn and stretch and try to come to life Wow Thank You rabbi it's amazing thank you really really appreciate it we'll grab a guess what yeah we actually have a rabbi in New York yes no friend of mine
who's made such a big personal friend of mine this guy is rabbi Ben soon class Scout oh he's in new yeah he's a fire is something else it's it's people like that who really make me feel how old I am he's just a bull is really amazing and we have some history together the very when he was a young couple with his wife at the very beginning of his career he actually moved to LA to UCLA only because I was there with my wife and now at least the Glazers are there we'll move it from New York that's a big move so so guess what by the time you moved there I moved back to Jerusalem and they show they
like where the glaze is rabbi Ben Tzion class go from New York what do you got to say about Hanukkah Shalom rabbi glazier it's a pleasure to be here with you so I do want to share a few thoughts about honican to understand really how bad things were and how amazing it was the actual miracle of Hanukkah what's hard to realize is that when Chanukah before the miracle of Hanukkah the Jewish people were in terrible terrible shape Antiochus the wicked Syrian Greek King had come to Yerushalayim and had decided he's going to decimate Judaism completely he started off with a false a fake high priest
whose name was Jason and Jason took over from his brother Canio and and agreed to all the terms that Antiochus wanted him to agree to which included putting an idol in the base Lamech - building a big gymnasium right next to the base Lamech - and in this gymnasium to convince all the Jews to come not just to play sports wasn't sports like today people follow sports all the time but in those days the Greeks the way they practice boards they would glorify the human body they would bring sacrifices to all the pantheon of Greek gods all the way up to Zeus and it was all about getting Jewish
people to leave Judaism in order to join the Greek culture the Greek tradition and the Greek value system and believe it or not as wicked and as awful as Jason was he wasn't wicked enough for the Mushaf him for the Helenus and so there was another Kohen Gadol who was not even a Cohen who paid Antiochus to kick Jason out and to take over Hannah's name was monolayers and monolayers came and he said I'm gonna go a step further I'm going to kill anyone who does not agree with the Greek philosophy in the Greek way of life and some amount of Laius began this war and in that war with her backing
down to Yahoo's he killed 40,000 innocent Jewish people and that was just the start later on Antiochus came in he was very upset he he also about monolayers is not doing enough monolayers began to fight Jason back and forth and audiocassette enough is enough you're all Jews you may think your Helenus but at the end of the day you're just Jews and you're babbling against me so he came in anyway wiped out tens of thousands of other Jews just for being Jewish but the Jewish people did not give up hope even though Antioch who said you know what that's it no more Torah no more circumcision no more
Shabbat no more holidays no blessing of the oonh to consecrate a new month none of that no judaism adopt Greek culture or Greek Greek life or you'll be killed mothers who had their sons circumsized were not just burnt alive but there were burnt with their little children hanging from their neck the little child who was just circumcised it was awful and those who would look at the state of Judaism would say to themselves Judaism is over the Jewish people are finished they're through they've been crushed they can't practice they can't speak the the Holy tongue Judaism for all intents and
purposes is gone and yet the Maccabean starting with the father mercutio and then his five children led by Yuda maka be with six thousand soldiers went against one greek battalion after the next destroying them until finally the epic battle where these six thousand maka beam destroyed fifty thousand Greek soldiers the top Italians that the Greeks had tremendous victory and then they went to the base I Mukesh rekindled the menorah from one flax that should have lasted one night and each night they were able to light again each day they were able to light again and Judaism once again was
revived that's the history in short but what's the lesson of this history and it's this there are times that we look at Judaism even today and we say how could it recover the assimilation rate it's astronomical apathy disinterest people are disillusioned you're in the age of Google and Facebook and opinions and counter opinions and where does Judaism in its beautiful traditions where does it stand how can I last how can it remain relevant and our numbers they're even doing doing less and less Jewish people understand and want to be devoted and connected I'm a campus rabbi that's what I do and
I go from campus to campus and literally handfuls of Jews out of thousands want to have anything to do with Jewish life on campus have the Greeks won have we assimilated ourselves into becoming those Helenus from the times of Chanukah perhaps perhaps things look very weak but that's why I'm Tanika we begin with one light on the first night we want to change the course of history we want to inspire and reinvigorate and we're determined to make a difference and when we can't change everything overnight maybe we say maybe that's it maybe Judaism can't make it in this millennium god forbid one
light because if you have that one light that one family of the Mokka beam me come uncle Bailey my son who is like you God you stand up and you're strong and you're determined to stay Jewish no matter what you stay the course well then that one light will turn to two lights at that one inspiration that one hour of Torah learning that one inspired Shabbat that one neighbor that you bring into your home and show them the beauty of Judaism that will become two lights and those two lights will become three and four until finally the whole ha new kia is lit that's the message of Chanukah we are
never out even though sometimes in history were down as long as we remain true to Torah as long as we love our Torah and we rally around it now when we look at the menorah we see different subliminal messages that are a guide to how we can reinvigorate and we inspire people to Judaism law number one the canoe kiya cannot be too high but it can't be too low either that's the law of the Hinoki a-- and so it is what we want to inspire people we can't be too I to the point that we're looking down on the other Jewish people and looking down on the world don't be too high you'll look like you're
arrogant you look like you're unreachable and you won't speak to other people they won't be able to connect with you but don't be so low don't grovel in the dirt with them don't run to their parties don't rub shoulders with them don't assimilate and hope that the more I am liking the more I'll influence them no that's not the way it works you have to remain at eye level so that you can look in the person's eye and say you know what Judaism is important no tricks no pageantry simple truth the second law when it comes to Tejano kia is it has to be by the window so that others can see it and be
inspired by it and so it is that's called presume a nisa to let people know about the miracle when it comes to our Judaism we have to be proud to be Jewish and we can't give up that pride even if other people look at our strangely often I travel and when I travel sometimes it's early in the morning and I have to put on my villain and my toilet in the airport and I know people are looking at me and they're wondering what am i doing what is this thing I'm wrapping myself and what are these straps I'm not embarrassed I'm not gonna hide I'm gonna be a Maccabee and if they want to know I tell them
you're religious the Bible says put it on it should be a sign between your eyes it should be a sign on your hand that's what Judaism is it's so important we're going to be like I'm okapi we're gonna be strong we're gonna be determined I'm gonna share with you a little story when I was a young child my father who's the doctor it was in the it was in the airport and it was time for him to Davin and people were already boarding they were already going on to the plane and I look at my father and I say to my father we got to go and he is Dominique he's diving and he's taking his time because he's
not going to shortchange Dominique so he'd eivin's beautifully but I'm nervous we're gonna miss the plane but I look at my father with a mix of concern and pride concerned we're gonna miss the plane but prideful that I'm looking at him and he's so proud to be Jewish and right after he finished Dominick there was a lady right nearby who collapsed she had a heart attack and my father who is an emergency room doctor was there to take care of her and if he had shortchange darling he would already be on the plane and this lady may not have made it but because he didn't shortchange it and he donned
with pride he'd Ivan with connection tosh em like a maca B he was there when this lady if fell and he was able to help her that's number two we've got to be by the window people have to look at us they have to say wow you're Jewish Wow I know what that is there's a very famous story of a person who lived in Beverly Hills and this fellow you know he was Jewish but he had assimilated he wasn't that proud of his Judaism he wanted to rub shoulders with all the Hollywood types and therefore instead of being proud of his Judaism he hid it he wanted desperately to fit in to the Beverly Hills crowd
and one day his daughter was going to bablu school she came home and she had with her a picture of the xmas tree and she said to her parents she said she said daddy why don't we have this tree in our house all my friends have this tree why don't we have this tree and the father when he looks at his daughter with a picture of the Xmas tree he's horrified so he says one second that's enough I'm not gonna have my daughter with an ex mystery he goes down he goes down to the basement and he finds a old Nokia a menorah with the colored candles and he takes them brings them upstairs and he puts that
canoe key on the windowsill and his wife comes in he says he says she says to him what are you doing you're gonna light them in or all the neighbors are gonna know that we're Jewish and if they know we're Jewish then they're gonna look down on us you can't put it there he said no I don't care I'm gonna put my handle key out there people should know that I'm proud of being Jewish I'm proud of my Judaism and so he lit that a new Kia and then he went outside to see how it looked from the window these beautiful colored candles in the windowsill and as he's looking with his daughter with pride of
the canoe Kia he sees that across the street a neighbor decided to do the exact same thing a neighbor who he thought was not Jewish who had changed their last name to a non-jewish last name but when they saw the canoe Kia they took out their canoe Kia and then the next neighbor did and in a few minutes the entire block was full of conocchia the menorah was lit from window after window all the windows were full because you see the whole block was full of Jews and nobody knew it because each one wanted to pretend that they weren't Jewish each one was ashamed there were no Makka beam there
weren't Maccabees all they were were people who wanted to blend in but that's not who we are that's not who the Jewish people are we have to be like Maccabees and that brings us to the third lesson the third idea the oil that was supposed to be used was shemin's Isaac it had to be beautiful pure oil used in the menorah and debate thymic - that's the lesson when it comes to Judaism when we want to transmit Judaism it's got to be pure the oil has to be oil that is beautiful and pure and when we transmit Judaism we can't dilute it we can't keep giving in because when you give it a little bit one
a locker let's sacrifice this law and that law and eventually it's not Judaism anymore little changes make a great big difference in the long run we want Judaism to last and that brings us to the fourth law you want to do judaism right you want to do Konica right it's near issue vey so you pants down that tradition involve your family in Judaism involve them in Hanukkah involve them and pacer involved em in Shabbos near issue a so that's minimum one person one light but if we want to do the mitzvah maja dream Meena Mehadrin the most beautiful way it's not just one there but every single day
we add another candle another light what does that mean practically what that means is that we have to be constantly growing and adding light to ourselves and our family and our community in our marriage to our children one light that's nice we hang on to that tradition it represents something but each night to add another light continuous growth throughout our lives and throughout our children's lives adding more Torah learning being careful about Lashon Hara teaching the children you know what this month let's make Bravo out loud let's make a Brock out loud and let everyone say a mane each
Mitzvah to try to grow it to try to nurture it so that it becomes part of us and we feel like our light is growing and each each night that light grows and we put it by the window and so to all the time are mixed vote are growing and our community sees it and our friends see it and they're gonna want to grow as well so this is gonna be my message to you dear listeners I want to thank you rabbi uncle Glaser for having me on and I wish you and all the people in Eretz Israel which is where you live and all the people in hoods Lords which is where we currently live a Hanukkah of light a Hanukkah
of growth Hanukkah of pride where we could stand there in front of everyone and say Mucca Mucca Bielema shem no one is like you Hashem no one is like you Milosh MLA whoever wants to whoever wants to connect them come to me it's not a matter of numbers it's a matter of determination the purity of the oil the determination to connect them it's vote and that way Chanukah will be much more than just presence it'll be much more than latkes and playing dreidel it'll be our exclamation our Proclamation that our Judaism is bright and shiny and growing and a light so that all the nations will see that
